Howdy you! Hope your Tuesday is just downright stellar! I am writing to you from what feels like a 100+ degree and humid day in good ole Baltimore. Ugh, just miserable. Hey, I like warm weather but this is just oppressive! Boo! Thought I would keep the trend going in regards to warm weather and talking about sunscreen today. Yes, with spending more and more times outdoors, it is extremely important to make sure you are protected so you can stay safe all while having fun this Summer! Regardless of it being the Summer, wearing your sunscreen is important 365 days a year. Trust me, for someone who has done some damage to her skin from years of tanning (and even sans sunscreen) I know the effects and now, more than ever, I am diligent about making sure I have the much needed protection. Here are some of my tips to making sure you stay safe and stay away from any nasty sunburns!
- Make sure to reapply every 80 minutes to 2 hours. You may even need to do so more often if you are swimming/sweating.
- SPF 30 is a good rule of thumb; generally speaking, this is the best for sun protection but do what works for YOU and/or what your doctor/dermatologist has recommended.
- Make sure to stay on top of your face, especially the nose, forehead and chin. When wearing glasses, these areas tend to get a little more exposure.
- While a nice golden glow is always welcome, alternate between sun and shade to give your skin a breather.
Now, let’s talk about some of my go-to brands!
First up, Sun Bum! I was introduced to the company awhile back and not only was I drawn to the packaging but I loved their tag line “trust the bum,” and their products are just perfect, especially for someone, like myself, who has really sensitive skin. UVA and UVB protection, it is gluten free, vegan free, PABA free, cruelty free, paraben free, reef friendly, hypoallergenic, and much more. Plus, it is infused with Vitamin E which is wonderful from a moisturization standpoint, and did I mention oil free as well?

Next, Supergoop! Developed 15 years ago, the owner (Holly) set out on a mission to create a suntan lotion that was made with only the highest quality ingredients (and chemical-free), and one that people would, actually, want to wear. I don’t know about you but I remember it feeling like such an inconvenience to put on sunscreen back in the day. With over 40 different varieties from which to choose, there are so many amazing options that will have you wanting to wear sunscreen every single day (and rightfully so too)!
A quick note! Both brands have another line that are mineral free. This is a question that gets asked a lot, and I want to make sure I address!
Something new I have added is by Tarte, and it is part of their Amazonian Clay Full Foundation Line. Another tag line that I love – “glides on like silk but wears like iron.” While this is a heavier foundation with SPF, it gives amazing coverage, has a flawless look, smooths pores and fine lines, and covers dark spots, redness, and imperfections. Talk about a plethora of shades from which to choose from as well! My recommendation is you get “color-tested,” and go one shade higher than your normal skin tone. Oh, and you will love the fact that it is enriched with Vitamin E and mineral pigments too!
